Destiny 2 Campaign: Payback

New Activities available

The Vanguard is back at the Farm preparing for the final assault to retake the City from Ghaul and the Red Legion. Speak with Hawthorne, Zavala, Ikora, and Cayde-6 at the Farm.

Cayde: So really what you’re saying is, we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

Zavala: On the contrary. Now that we are together again, we just might stand a chance.

Ikora: The fact is, if we destroy that weapon… we will ignite a chain reaction that could send our sun into a… supernova.

Cayde: Well. At least we have each other.

Zavala: Indeed. We all know what needs to be done. The Traveler must be freed.

Cayde: I’m thinking the three of us and a big, fat pile of explosives can get the job done. Look. I still have that Vex teleporter. It’s got a limited range, so we’ll have to get a little too close for comfort.

Zavala: Then we get inside the City walls for it to be effective.

Ikora: But without Light, an outright assault on the Wall is doomed to fail. We could– There will be no coming back.

Cayde: It’s worth it.

Ikora: How do we get in?

Hawthorne: You know… the City wall is kind of like this barn. Plenty of places to slip in unseen. So long as you know how.

Cayde: You sure you’re not one of my Hunters?

Hawthorne: Hah. Not really into capes.

Cayde: Clearly. Nice poncho.

Hawthorne: You need to get your team into the City without raising any alarms. My people and I can help you do that. We also happen to be pretty good at shooting bad guys.

Ikora: Hawthorne. It’s one thing for us to put our lives on the line, but… this doesn’t have to be your fight. You’re not a…

Hawthorne: A Guardian? You think you’ve cornered the market on sacrifice? You forget that we’ve had to survive without the Light all our lives! Once upon a time, that big white ball in the sky was there for all of us. I think it’s about time we returned the favor. Guardians or not.

Cayde: That’s a great speech and all, but let’s not forget the whole supernova and complete annihilation thingy.

Zavala: If we can’t destroy the Almighty, we’ll have to disable its weapon. And that means getting a certain Guardian on board.

Ikora: We’ll need a good disguise if we’re going to fly right through a Cabal armada.

Hawthorne: If it’s a Cabal ship you need, there’s a base nearby full of them. But it won’t be easy sneaking in.

Zavala: Oh, we’re done sneaking. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Cayde… it’s the value of a grand entrance.

Cayde: This is great. Anyone want a hug? Hugs? No? No hugs.

Location: The Farm

Hawthorne: Remember that Cabal base round the way? One of Ghaul’s buddies runs it. Blood Guard by the name of Thumos. We know he’s got access to the Almighty. So you crash the base, steal Thumos’ ship, use it to sneak aboard the Almighty, and shut it down before it can blow up our sun. Do me a favor? Put Thumos down while you’re at it. When you get the signal, we move on the City. Take it back. Gotta say, I really didn’t think you’d come back from your interplanetary jaunt. Much less with the Vanguard by your side. Look at us. Red Legion doesn’t stand a chance.

We have a new plan. The Vanguard will lead a host of Lightless Guardians on a counteroffensive against the occupied City, hoping to free the Traveler. Meanwhile, you must disable the Almighty’s sun-killing superweapon before it can destroy the entire solar system. To approach the Almighty undetected, steal the personal ship of Thumos the Unbroken, one of Ghaul’s chosen Blood Guard. Bring the fight back to the Red Legion by completing mission “Payback” in the EDZ.

NOTE: Press TAB for 2 seconds to launch the map. Select the Red Legion icon at the Gulch. Press the white down-arrow to teleport to the Gulch.

Time for Zavala’s grand entrance — finally attacking the Red Legion base in the EDZ head-on.

Enter the cave, find the object shown below, and press E to start the mission.

Get to the shipyards in the Red Legion base
Enter the Red Legion base and meet with Holliday

Zavala: Guardian. You got a tough road ahead. So I’m sending in Holliday with something… special.

Cayde-6: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa — how special are we talking here?

Zavala: Just keep moving. Storm the facility and board the Cabal Carrier. No matter the cost — we MUST get to the Almighty.

Cayde-6: So, Zavala, I gotta ask you something. When you told our Guardian friend here, and I quote, “I need Cayde,” did you by any chance happen to maybe… cry?

Zavala: Ahem. Holliday. What’s your status?

Cayde-6: Let the record show: no denial.

NOTE: You will find a few Legionaire and Phalanx here.

Holliday: Still a couple clicks out, Commander. This girl’s heavy! Heads up!

Ghost: You got us a TANK?!

Cayde-6: You got them a TANK? How come I never got a tank?

Holliday: You know you’d just break it.

NOTE: Press E next to the tank to enter the Drake tank. Press the END button to leave the tank. Press and Hold E to lock onto targets.

Holliday: Guardian: holler my way if you need another one of these armored beauties. Plenty more where that came from.

Cayde-6: Oh so I get nothing, and they get as many as they want. I see how it is.

NOTE: A Thresher (airship) flies in. Press E to lock and shoot it down with your tank.

There are a few snipers far in the distance. You can Press END to leave the tank to shoot them with your weapon.

The next tunnel has several enemy units, and a Thresher. It is best to shoot that Thresher from the previous spot you destroyed the first Thresher, so that it doesn’t shoot you back.

Ghost: Don’t think we’re going to be able to shoot our way through that door. The override should be nearby.

Advance to the Red Legion Carrier
Find a way to open the tunnel door

Press E next to the yellow marker to open the Tunnel Door.

Holliday: Heads up! That carrier’s spinning up its engines. You might want to pick up the pace!

Zavala: Thumos is on that carrier. He has what you need to infiltrate the Almighty. MOVE!

NOTE: This area is uneven, and sort of uphill, making it difficult to aim manually with the tank. Press E and hold to lock targets.

If you lose your tank, press E on these pads to summon a new tank. I was noob and didn’t figure that out until later (as seen in the video).

A Thresher drops a Red Legion Goliath (elite tank). Try to position yourself in a way that you can shoot at it, but it can’t shoot back — using the corner as cover.

Force your way through Red Legion defenses.

Ghost: Well. They’ve retraced the bridge. We’re not going to be able to cross that gap.

Cayde-6: Oh, your super tank can’t fly? Oh…

NOTE: The bridge is not accessible ahead. Press END to exit the tank. You have to climb the ramp in the far back as seen in the image below to access the computer terminal that unfolds the bridge. Take out the snipers first. There are several heavy-shielded enemies up there as well.

Shortly after, a door opens and a pack of War Beasts charge you. Inside, there is a Colossus. Shoot his head several times.

Ghost: That should give us a way across.

Inside this room, search for this computer terminal and press E to Extend the Bridge.

Cayde-6: So, if it wasn’t to give me a tank — why did you send our favorite Guardian to find me?

Zavala: I… find your high-risk, high-reward combat maneuvers to be effective and… inspirational.

Cayde-6: Well yeah, but with a tank they could be like a million times MORE inspirational!

NOTE: Return to the tank and press E to mount it. The bridge has now been extended. However, enemy units are now hiding on the left and right sides of the end of the bridge. Shoot them with the tank. As soon as you do, a wave of War Beasts and vehicles start charging at you through the bridge.

TIPS: The next room after the bridge has a pad to summon new tanks by pressing E on the pad — if your tank is destroyed. You can press END to exit the tank before it is destroyed. Press the right-button in your mouse to ZOOM in on targets; and press and HOLD E to lock on targets. I didn’t use any of these tips in the video, however. I learned about them while editing the video.

This room has another bridge, and several Legion enemies, and two enemy tanks. Use the rock formations to shield you from the tank attacks.

Eventually, a Thresher ship descends into the cave. Shoot it asap before it starts shooting volleys of energy missiles.

Afterwards, you go through a long tunnel and reach the exit leading you to the outdoors: Sunken Isles.

Ghost: They’re shielding the carrier! Wait– see those generators? We need to take them out if we’re going to board that carrier.

Disable the Red Legion carrier’s shield
Shield generators destroyed 0 of 2
Take down the carrier’s defenses by destroying both shield generators

OPTIONAL: There is a computer terminal in the bunker in front of the ship’s rear. Press E to Investigate.

Ghost: (Sigh) A great example of how the Legion works. Their technology is as brutal as they are. Conquer, control, and then pave it over.

NOTE: The engine that needs to be destroyed looks like this. It has a force-field that can’t be destroyed with normal weapons. Use the tank to destroy it.

Ghost: One generator down.

Ghost: Shield’s down, but the ship’s about to launch without us!

Zavala: Keep that carrier on the ground!

Cayde-6: Couple of missiles up its tailpipe ought to do the job.

A Thresher drops a Red Legion Goliath (tank). Dispatch it quick. As soon as it is destroyed, a new objective appears onscreen.

Ground the Red Legion carrier
Destroy the central fuel conduit at the rear of the ship

NOTE: Go back to the road toward the tunnel you came from to be able to see the rear of the ship. Then shoot the tank cannon at the blue spot in the lower rear.

Ghost: The carrier’s grounded. Now let’s find Thumos.

Zavala: Good work, Guardian. And Cayde… after this is over, I’ll talk to Holliday about your tank.

Cayde-6: Aw… I missed you too, buddy.
