Destiny 2 Campaign: Shard of the Traveler

The Shard of the Traveler quest or mission becomes available when the player reaches level 12. At that point, the quest’s purpose is to unlock the Sub-Class which adds new abilities. One can switch back to the original class, however, from the Character gear UI.

Warning: There is no visual signs or NPCs pointing you to this quest. You find it at level 12 by looking into the FARM map. It appears as a very large Triangle on the map. When you hover it, the quest Shard of the Traveler is displayed. Click to launch the mission. Read the transcript after the break for images and guidelines, or watch the video.


At level 12, open the Directory by holding the TAB button for 2-3 seconds until the map appears. At the top, select DESTINATIONS. Here you can view the planets. Select THE FARM (if you aren’t already in the Farm).


When you are in The Farm, open the MAP by pressing TAB for 2 seconds. The large blue triangle marks the Sub-Class quest titled SHARD OF THE TRAVELER. Left-Click to select and launch the mission.

Return to the Shard of the Traveler and restore your connection to the Light.
Recommended Power: 50


Enter the Dark Forest.
Follow the pull of your artifact as it leads you into the Dark Forest.

Location: The Sludge

Ghost: This forest again… well, I can’t say our last visit wasn’t memorable. Let’s see what we can find.


NOTE: Press TAB to open the Ghost’s Nav Mode to find your destination. You will run upstream through the river for about 30 seconds. Then you will find a portal.

Ghost: Whoa! Um. Knock knock?


Explore the Dark Forest
Search the area to understand why the Light had drawn you here.

Ghost: Gotta love the ambience… Hey! Do you see that? Over there. The light.

NOTE: Whenever you see light on the ground, move toward it for the next part of the quest objectives. You are looking for holograms made of light when you step into these light zones with hovering shimmers and sparkles of light. To find the holograms, follow the small light pools on the river or the ground. These are breadcrumb marks to lead you to the next hologram.


Hologram 1: You are a Guardian of the Last City. You are the hope for humanity. Some doctrines argue that the role of a Titan is to stand in defense of the City. The Strikers see a crackling offense as the best defense. Strikers throw their bodies at incoming fire so others won’t have to. It’s also the most direct line to a target. Because, you see, when a Striker turns her entire body into a projectile, no one is truly safe. And at close quarters, a fist is better than any gun.

Hologram 2: As a Titan, you lead the charge. You are the first into the fray. The body is made from tiny stuff, from near-nothings. From atoms swimming through a blood of crackling sparks. Simple, eternal laws shape the universe. The largest galaxy is ruled by principles of mass and motion. Electrons are slaves to charge and to chance. And this is why the universe feels inexhaustible, eternal. The Light allows us to master charge and chance. Wielding Arc energy in their fists, Strikers become the roar of thunder, the crash of lightning.


Hologram 3: Some of the greatest Titans have defined the charge. Lord Shaxx. Saint-14. Wei Ning.

Female voice: When my Ghost found me – when I was reborn as a Titan – she found me in a desert. I had died far from civilization, far from anything I could have possibly used to defend myself. I had the armor she made me, flimsy as it was, and a thousand miles to walk to get to what she said was my new home. Of course, we ran into problems.


Clear the area.

NOTE: After the third hologram, you will engage in combat against dregs, vandals. Shoot them or punch them. Careful with the grenades they throw. I counted 16 minions and 2 Captain. Captains have a shield. You must melee-punch them to break the shield.


Use the Portal.

Once all 18 targets are death, a portal opens up. Don’t forget to search the area for loot you forgot to pick up. Walk toward the portal. Even if the whole screen goes white, keep moving forward until you teleport to another location.


Explore the Dark Forest.
Continue deeper into the forest.

NOTE: You teleport into the exit of a train tunnel. The objective is to walk toward the pools of light to search for new holograms. The light pools throughout the ground are breadcrumbs to lead you to the Hologram location.

Ghost: I think these Light projections might be lessons.

Hologram 4: Bandits, first, with guns scavenged from who knows where. My second death was terrifying. But I got back up, and the night sky sparkled overhead, and the man that killed me stared aghast, and I laughed. Immortal! Me! I could do anything! So I threw myself at him. If my body couldn’t be broken, then that was my greatest weapon, greater than any gun that could jam or knife that could dull. Each punch and charge and kick would only sharpen my skills. I taught the Strikers this truth. The fastest and surest way to a Guardian’s victory is to rush headlong into that danger. Be unafraid. You are the lightning, and the thunder after it.


Hologram 5: With Strikers at the fore, the Red Legion cannot hope to stand against us. We are the Titans of the Last City. We are Strikers. And we will not be stopped.


Hologram 6: I hear the roar before I see him, but when I look up, I can make out a blue burst against the skyline. When he falls, he brings the sky with him. He scatters me and my squad to the wind. Leaves us dead as the moment our Ghosts found us. They bring us back, and he helps us up. Then he says one thing. He said… “Tell me what you’ve learned.”


Pass through the portal.
Another portal has opened. Continue to explore the Dark Forest.

NOTE: Take the portal — found a few yards behind the hologram.


Clear the area.

Ghost: Another Shard of the Traveler! But we’re not alone.

NOTE: This wave you will fight those flying Shank or Tracer Shank, Dregs, Vandals, and Captains. Total: 18 minions (including 2 Captains).


Commune with the Shard.

Ghost: This Shard called us here. I’m sure of it.

NOTE: Approach the tall Shard, but don’t get too close to it. Move until you see the (E) onscreen and stop immediately. Then press (E) to interact.




Titan Subclass: Striker obtained.

Ghost: The Shard gave us a gift. Let’s use it.

Defend the Shard.
Harness your newfound power to stand against the Fallen.

NOTE: A new event starts, and it is kinda intense. You will panic due to the sheer numbers shooting at you in plain open ground. Relax. Run to the forest and use the trees and rocks for cover. The several yellow Light pools on the ground are actually healing wells. Stand on them to auto-heal damage done to you.


You will fight dregs, wretches, captains, and resilient captains. The captains have a shield that need to be destroyed with melee-punches. The resilient Captains are more dangerous because they keep chasing you nonstop to stab you with their two-swords. The easiest way is to kill them from easy to hardest depending on proximity. Start with minions, then kill Captains, and then Resilient Captains (when appropriate).


If you aren’t near a healing well, jump constantly into the air to avoid melee damage from Resilient Captains, while shooting them down; and approach the nearest healing well to stand your ground. Fastest way to kill Captains and Resilient Captains is melee-punching them while standing on Healing Wells (Boundless Light).

In total, I counted approximately 71 targets killed, but I might have missed some who died due to grenades or the Ultimate ability. There were 13 captains and 6 Resilient Captains unless I missed some. Don’t chill yet… more are coming…

Ghost: I’m picking up Fallen radio chatter. They’re calling reinforcements!

NOTE: A boss named Poknis, Order Captain arrives. he has some kind of fire missile cannon weapon, and teleports often. Stand on the Boundless Light (Healing Well). However, if he gets into melee range, he will knock you back away from the Boundless Light. Run to the Boundless Light asap before attacking to prevent sudden death. He has about 18 minions. As soon as you can, use your super ability to damage the boss. I managed to drop him down to half-Health.


Ghost: Incredible. If that was a test, I think we aced it.


Leave the Dark Forest.

NOTE: You don’t need to do anything at this point. You are auto-teleported to The Sludge.

Ghost: I’m sure the Traveler called us to the forest deliberately. It’s amazing that even a corrupted Shard can still do so much good.


MISSION END: Seconds Remaining – 10 seconds.




Change Subclass: You got a new subclass, but you can still switch back to your old one. Press F1 to open your Character screen.
